Often, you will hear stories about other countries that are struggling with water scarcity and think, “We are so lucky to live in the United States.” But is the water quality actually okay here? According to a 2015 study done by the nonprofit, Natural Resources Defense Council, 18 million people in the United States are dealing with contaminants that are in violation of the EPA’s (Environmental Protection Agency) regulations. We have all heard of numerous cities having major issues with water quality; just look at Flint, Michigan. Even here in our little town of Prescott, AZ we have recently had to shut down wells in the area due to the PFAS and PFOS chemicals. Really, nobody knows what exactly is in our water today – testing for the over 4000 known chemicals in water today would be very expensive! That’s a good enough reason why everybody should be considering a whole house water filter.
Outdated Infrastructure
Old water main pipes were constructed with lead, copper or galvanized materials. As these pipes start to break down, especially in older areas, these metals get into the water supply. Unfortunately, heavy metals can bring serious health risks. You really have no idea what you’re drinking every time you turn on the tap to get a glass of water for yourself, or your kids. You could be serving up these toxic metals as well as other toxic chemicals that are simply making people ill. A whole house water filter can filter out lead and other harmful toxins when it is built with the correct media beds.
Other Things Found in Water
While the possibility of lead getting into water should be enough for everyone to install a whole house water filter system, that is not the only thing that is found in drinking water. A recent study by the Environmental Working Group at Northwestern University found that 43 states in the U.S. have areas of water that are contaminated with PFAS (toxic fluorinated compound). Unfortunately, PFAS is not the only thing that is toxic in this water. The same study found that agricultural chemicals, including arsenic, as well as many other toxic chemicals were found in the water supply of over 33 states.
Filtration Is Strongly Suggested
There are so many chemicals, organic matter, and more that could be floating around in tap water that cannot be detected but have been proven to be a tremendous health risk. A whole house water filter should be installed on every home in the United States to ensure the cleanest water possible. The EPA states that about 91% of all drinking water in the US meets EPA requirements. What that means is “you can” drink a little poison every day, legally. I don’t want to drink poison at any level! It is hazardous to your health, without a doubt. I am not drinking ANY poison, NADA, at any level; every little bit matters to the trillions of cells in our body. Millions and millions of people are being exposed to unsafe toxic water everyday by drinking and showering in it.
