Stress and Dehydration, Symptoms & Treatment of Dehydration

What Causes Dehydration?

Here few questions can arise in your minds. What causes dehydration? Can stress cause dehydration? Can dehydration cause stress?

The simple and sweet answer of your questions is that stress can cause dehydration and dehydration can cause stress. It’s a nasty cycle. However, you can break down these dehydration effects and reduce stress with more water consumption into your day. Stress can also result in many of the same reactions as dehydration.

How do you know if you’re dehydrated?

Staying hydrated is the key to staying healthy. So how would you know that you are dehydrated? Well there are numerous signs that can indicate that you are dehydrated:

  1. Feeling thirsty?
  2. Feeling tired, confused or angry?
  3. Have dry eyes or blurred vision?
  4. Having a headache every day?
Causes and Symptoms of Dehydration

In addition to feeling thirsty, there are a number of signs and symptoms associated with being mildly dehydrated and some serious ones associated with acute dehydration.

Mild symptoms include:

  • Headache
  • Low Energy Level
  • Less Mental Acuity
  • Low Back Pain
  • Digestive Disorders
  • Constipation
  • Weight Issues
  • Dry Skin and Hair
  • Irritability

Acute symptoms include:

  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Arthritis and Joint Pain

So how much water should you drink in a day?

It has been estimated that our bodies lose about 10 cups of water in a day during normal function. This water must be altered with the water we drink and the food we eat everyday, but how much water you should drink each day depends on things like the size of your body, how physically active you are and even the climate in which you are residing. In general, you should drink 8 glass of water every day or between 1.5 litres and 3.5 litres.

Dehydration Treatment:

Are you looking ways to reduce stress? Therefore, a simple way to unwind from stress is: drink a glass of water.

Sound easy? There is strong linkage between water and stress reduction. Moreover, all organs of the body, including our brain, needs water to function in a proper way. If you’re dehydrated, then your body will not function well and thus that can lead to stress. To drink 8 glass of water is one of the ways in order to stay hydrated. So by staying hydrated you can keep stress level down. Because when your body doesn’t get the fluids it needs, you’re putting stress on it,

That necessarily doesn’t mean that drinking a lot of water whole the day will magically solve your all problems and troubles. But if you’re already stressed by handling with all your problems, you don’t need the extra stress of dehydration in order to increase your burden. When you’re under stress, you are likely to be more dehydrated, because your heart rate is up and you are facing difficulty in proper breathing, so you are losing fluid.

Effect of hydration state on resistance exercise:

A Journal of Applied Physiology study1 found that dehydration by 2.5% to 5.0% of body mass strongly increased cortisol, epinephrine, and norepinephrine, the primary stress hormones simultaneously. So dehydration is a cause of stress and stress often leads to dehydration. Are you feeling stressed out? Then the symptoms above are enough to cause stress in anyone. Therefore, the best way to break this vicious cycle, avoid the symptoms above, and reap the benefits of hydration is to simply relax and drink up!
